What's the difference between beginner and advanced retinols in the MariposaSkincare.com collection?

Beginner retinols are formulated with lower concentrations or gentler forms of vitamin A, making them perfect if you’re new to retinol or have sensitive skin. Advanced retinols, like those from SkinMedica® and Obagi®, deliver higher potency for more noticeable results and are best for experienced users comfortable with retinol. Start with a beginner formula and work up to stronger options as your skin adjusts for optimal anti-aging and brightening benefits.

Will retinol products make my skin irritated or sensitive to the sun?

Retinol can sometimes cause redness or irritation, especially when you first start using it. To minimize this, apply a small amount at night, 2-3 times per week, then gradually increase frequency as your skin gets used to it. Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day, since retinol may increase sun sensitivity. All retinols from top brands like SkinMedica® and Obagi® should be applied to clean, dry skin for best results.

How do I choose the right retinol treatment for my skin concerns?

Think about your experience with retinols and your skin goals. For first-time users or if you have sensitive skin, try a mild formula from our beginner retinol range. If you’re targeting fine lines, wrinkles, or uneven skin texture and your skin tolerates retinoids, advanced options like SkinMedica® Retinol Complex or Obagi® Retinol 1.0 are great picks. If unsure, consult with a dermatologist before use. All products in our collection are carefully selected for quality and safety to support your skincare journey.
